The world’s most beautiful airline lounges

Favourite lounges from Zurich to Hong Kong, experienced in person

By Lars Holling

From the terrace in Zurich to sushi in Doha: join me in my favourite lounges. We can book suitable lounge access or a VIP service as part of your trip.

A great journey begins long before the gate, in a lounge where time slows down. A glass of champagne, a good meal, peace away from the busy terminal: the airport becomes the first highlight of the trip. We introduce you to some of our favourite lounges, from Zurich to Hong Kong.

SWISS First Class Lounge, Zurich

Swiss understatement at its finest: oak parquet, Jura limestone and designer furniture by Vitra and de Sede. Even check-in is private, with its own reception and security screening. Long-haul passengers are driven by limousine from Dock A to the First Lounge in Dock E.

There you will find suites for resting, a terrace overlooking the Alps and the apron, and a tasting menu with wine pairings.

What I particularly enjoy eating is the pappardelle with lobster, or the truffle scrambled eggs in the morning. If you are flying in the evening, you can also visit the cigar lounge in the Dock A area and enjoy a leisurely cigar.

Lufthansa First Class Terminal, Frankfurt

No busy terminal, no queues: the First Class Terminal is a separate building with its own driveway. A personal assistant takes care of check-in and luggage, while security and passport control take place inside.

Inside, you will find a restaurant with à la carte dining, a well-stocked whisky bar, a cigar lounge and rest rooms with a bathtub. When it is time to depart, a limousine takes you straight to the aircraft. This used to be a Porsche; today it is a BMW. Skytrax named the terminal Europe’s best First Class Lounge in 2026.

In the past the transfer to the aircraft was by Porsche, today it is by BMW.

As a souvenir, you can take home a small rubber duck bearing the words “Lufthansa First Class Terminal”. There are various colours, and usually a red Christmas duck at Christmas too.

Cathay Pacific The Pier First Class Lounge, Hong Kong

Many frequent flyers call The Pier the most beautiful lounge in Asia. Warm materials, soft lighting and generous space create an atmosphere that feels more like a boutique hotel than an airport.

The restaurant serves à la carte, and the bar offers cocktails exclusive to this lounge. There are also several champagnes at the bar; the rosé champagne was my favourite.

At the lounge’s own spa, “The Retreat”, a massage is a relaxing way to begin or end a long flight.

Emirates First Class Lounge, Dubai

Dubai takes a generous approach: the First Class Lounge occupies an entire level of the terminal. From the lounge, you board the aircraft directly, without walking through the terminal.

Champagne flows freely, and the restaurant offers international and Arabic cuisine. I particularly enjoyed the sushi area.

The spa offers a chance to unwind before a night flight. A stopover in Dubai begins at the airport itself. Alternatively, you can visit the cigar lounge and enjoy a cigar in peace.

Qatar Airways Business Class Lounges, Doha

The Al Mourjan Business Lounge South is near the Louis Vuitton shop and the famous teddy bear, which stands around seven metres tall. With your boarding pass, you head up to the third floor, where a gleaming silver reception welcomes guests. Its defining features include two restaurants, a water feature beneath a five-tier chandelier and a floor area equivalent to ten Olympic swimming pools. The food has earned recognition too: Skytrax named it the lounge with the world’s best Business Class dining. There are also shower suites with Diptyque toiletries and a dedicated business centre.

The new The Garden Lounge opened in April 2023 as the new flagship lounge. It overlooks “The Orchard”, the indoor garden in the terminal extension. The lounge covers 7,390 m² and accommodates 707 guests. Facilities include single and double quiet rooms, showers, a baby changing room, a children’s playroom, a games room, a smoking room and a fitness area with treadmills and cross trainers. There are also sleeping rooms and a day spa. All food is freshly prepared to order and served with a personal touch. I particularly enjoyed the delicious sushi and the accompanying Lanson Le Black Creation champagne.

On almost all Qatar Airways routes, Business Class is the highest cabin offered. It is usually better than various First Class products on European or American airlines. This also means that you need a Qatar Platinum frequent flyer card or a flight on one of the few First Class routes to enter the Qatar First Class Lounge. Despite holding a oneworld Emerald card, the highest oneworld status, I have not yet visited the Qatar First Class Lounge. The Business Lounge is already so good, though, that it would be hard to surpass.

Qatar Airways Lounge, London Heathrow

This was Qatar Airways’ first lounge outside Doha designed exclusively for First and Business Class guests. It opened in 2012. Access is limited to passengers departing London in First or Business Class. There are two dining options: the Brasserie offers fine dining, while the Global Deli is more informal. Guests praise the à la carte menu, the staff and the very clean showers. Skytrax awarded the lounge five stars for its facilities and service. Frequent flyers consider it one of Europe’s best lounges, and some even prefer it to the lounge in Doha.

I particularly liked the bar area. You can enjoy very good sushi and a glass of rosé champagne here. The lounge is certainly considerably better than what is generally offered for Business Class passengers at European airports.

Virgin Atlantic Clubhouse, London Heathrow

British style with a sense of humour: the Clubhouse in Terminal 3 is Virgin Atlantic’s flagship and was named Europe’s best Business Class Lounge by Skytrax in 2026. The atmosphere feels like a fashionable London members’ club rather than a formal airport lounge.

The restaurant offers table service, the long bar serves creative cocktails, and the lounge overlooks the apron. It is the sort of place where you almost regret your flight being on time.

There is good food here too, and you can relax with a glass of rosé champagne while waiting for your flight. Showers are available as well, if you arrive in a hurry from an appointment.

United Polaris Lounge, Chicago O’Hare

With its Polaris Lounges, United Airlines redefined Business Class on the ground, and it all began at its Chicago O’Hare hub. Travellers in Polaris Business Class on international long-haul flights have access.

The Dining Room serves à la carte, with American hospitality at the buffet and bar too. I recommend the very good Signature Polaris Burger. Simply excellent!

Alongside good wines, beer and cocktails, the bar naturally serves delicious rosé champagne too.

Quiet rooms with daybeds and shower suites help you board feeling refreshed, even after a long connection.

Turkish Airlines Business Class Lounge, Istanbul

Between Europe and Asia lies one of the world’s most impressive lounges: across around 5,600 m², Turkish Airlines shows what Turkish hospitality means.

Food takes centre stage. Numerous live cooking stations prepare fresh pide, mezze and Turkish specialities, alongside dishes from Asian cuisine. Turkish tea and coffee complete the experience.

Quiet zones, private suites with showers and peaceful work areas offer a suitable space for every need. Even a longer stay becomes a pleasure.

What I particularly like is the variety of food, although you really do have to be careful not to eat too much. After all, the aircraft offers the same excellent catering as the lounge, from the world’s best airline caterer, Do & Co. Attila Dogudan runs it all with real passion. I once had the pleasure of meeting him. He pays close attention to everything he does and lends a hand himself when needed.

Adding lounge access to your trip

Flying with a low-cost airline or on a charter flight with only one cabin class? You can still enjoy the comfort of a lounge: Fly Unique can simply add lounge access to your booking.

Not every exclusive lounge requires a First Class ticket. Fraport’s VIP service in Frankfurt can be booked regardless of airline or booking class: check-in, security and passport control take place away from the terminal, private suites are available, and a limousine takes you to the aircraft.

In Berlin, the Zeitgeist VIP service at BER offers a similar experience: reception at the car park, dedicated checks, an à la carte restaurant and a cigar lounge, for departures as well as arrivals and connections. We will be happy to arrange this service as part of your trip.

Where a pleasant lounge is available, we are happy to book it for you at your departure or destination airport.

Some countries also offer a “Red Carpet” or “Meet & Assist” service. You are escorted directly from check-in to the lounge or aircraft, or met at the aircraft on arrival. Fast track then takes you quickly through the airport or straight to an arrivals lounge.

At small airfields such as Schönhagen or Marl-Loemühle, there may be no VIP lounge with catering, but there is something far more valuable: time. You park free of charge on site, there is no security screening, and you walk straight to the aircraft without waiting. Once you are on board, you can set off on your well-earned holiday.
